Do Bar Fights Count? How To Write Your Military Stories is the book version of the ten-week Writing War Stories class Kim developed and taught at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, from 1997 through 2000.

The book uses classroom examples, military references, and Kim's personal military experience to educate and coach veterans through what she calls her "Clint Eastwood School of Writing, where we write and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly."

Broken into four sections, the book covers:

  • Writer Basic Training
  • Specific Veteran Groups
  • Using Writing to Heal
  • Shoving Off

Kim does it all with a sense of humor and empathy for all military personnel. She hits topics head on including swearing, suicide, and sex. Homework assignments and step-by-step instructions make this an easy to follow guide for all military service members from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan.
